The LaRue County MatHawks traveled to Lexington Friday & Saturday to compete in the 2017 KHSAA State Wrestling Championships. The Hawks walked away with several medalists and finished 12th place in the state as a team. Junior Noah Davis took home a 7th place finish in the 138lb weight class. Noah wrestled very well throughout the tournament, he really put it together and wrestled his way on to the podium. Junior Dalton Bell took home a 6th place finish in the 160lb weight class. Dalton has really had a great 2nd half of the season (1st half he was out with injury), he wrestled every match with conviction and grit and was tough in every match. Dalton and Noah are very deserving of these all state honors and will look to be higher on the podium next year. Senior Matt Steven finished 2nd in the state at the 195lb weight class. Matt was injured 2 weeks ago with a separated shoulder which requires surgery but he wrestled through the pain, he wrestled one of the best tournaments I have ever seen and gave one of the gutsiest performances I have ever seen. He had one of the best seasons in LaRue County Wrestling history, just because he didn’t win a state title doesn’t make it something that we aren’t proud of. Seniors Stiles Metcalf didn’t end his season the way he wanted to either. He suffered a concussion in the 2nd round and his tournament was over, but in the same sense he had a heck of a season with over 50 wins and setting the single season pins record. Senior Levi Goodin went 2-2 on the weekend and avenged a loss he took in the region finals. Levi had a great season and gave it everything he could.
As a coach I can say we had a great season, my seniors have left a lasting impression on these younger guys which will be felt for years to come. We will take a short break and begin to prepare for next year.
